SINGLUAR (MONTELUKAST)
Purpose of medication and method of action: Singular is a drug used to
prevent the acute attacks of asthma. It works by interfering with the inflammatory process
(a leukotriene inhibitor) which is a necessary prerequisite to an acute attack. It is of
little value when used to treat an acute attack.
Side Effects: The most significant side effects are: diarrhea, cough and pharyngitis(3%)
Drug Interactions: None of significance reported.
Cautions and Contraindications: This drug is of no value to treat acute asthmatic attacks.
Usual Dose: Adults - One tablet taken in the evening. Children 6-14 years of age - One 5 mg tablet to be chewed each evening.
Note: Because this drug prevents asthmatic attacks, it is important that no doses be missed!! If a dose is missed do not take two tablets the next day but continue one tablet daily.
